Training Within Industry (TWI) was developed over 60 years ago by the U.S. Department of War and was instrumental in boosting productivity within the manufacturing sector and allowing the Allies to be victorious. The TWI program is composed of a set of standardized courses to develop the fundamental skills of front line supervisors, team leaders and truly any leader of people. Because the role of small teams in daily management and continuous improvement is essential for success, the skills TWI teaches are essential for any organization seriously pursuing operational excellence.
TWI is built around three primary "J" courses:
The Problem Solving (PS) and Job Safety (JS) are available to supplement the 3 core J courses. These are delivered on-the-job in five 2-hour sessions. Daily training sessions involve discussion and practice using real-life examples and situations. This is followed by immediate practice and coaching ensures that the information is retained. Class sizes are kept small to maximize interaction and learning.
The TWI program follows a proven 4-step process that is simple and practical to learn:
- Preparation
- Presentation
- Application
- Testing
